Springtime brings the promise of warmer days, but its notoriously unpredictable weather requires a strategic approach to dressing.

Layering is your best friend during these in-between months when the sun can be deceiving- a vest isn’t going to cut it when that harsh gust of wind hits you!

We all love a statement piece, but it’s those reliable, versatile essentials that will get you through sun and rain.

Here is our guide to mastering the art of springtime dressing.

Overshirts

Sweaters, shakets, hoodies, jumpers- you name it. These are your key layering pieces for the next few months.

Sweater vests paired with t-shirts or long-sleeve shirts provide extra warmth and can give you that ever so chic, preppy aesthetic.

Avoid shawl neck cardigans because frankly they are giving grandpa, (and I don't mean eclectic grandpa). Instead, opt for romantic and elegant looks with cozy knits like this one. Wear it open to showcase what's underneath (a plain t-shirt is a great choice), then button up when the temperature dips.

Swap out your heavyweight winter jumpers for something with an open weave. Knitted or crocheted, they are more breathable and all the rage this season- interesting weaves or patterns are encouraged!

Shirts

Guys can tend to play it safe, relying on a trusty line-up of T-shirts, usually in basic black, white, or the occasional graphic print. But why not spice things up a bit with some colour, texture, or intriguing patterns?

Start with a t-shirt featuring an interesting detail. Even a subtle change in texture, like with this Rick Owens one, can take your outfit from standard to effortlessly stylish.

Things like cut-out details, embroidery and special materials produce different effects, allowing you to make a statement. Opt for items that layer well like this AMIRI shirt, which works with a jacket on top or even a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath.

When it comes to must-have pieces, the collared shirt is a classic for every and any occasion. It's all about styling: leave a few buttons undone for that laid-back, romantic vibe, rock the preppy look with a sweater vest, or go for a sharp office ensemble with a tie and blazer. And hey, if you like layering, go for a larger size so you can wear it open over your favourite tees.

Jeans and Trousers

Jeans are a staple year-round, offering versatility for every season. While shorts are perfect for summer and long cuts keep us warm in winter, what about spring? Well, the runway has spoken, showcasing a variety of in-between styles like Kenzo's wide-legged jeans that hit just below the knee. They're ideal for those warmer spring days, and it’s is your chance to show off your best socks!

As for trousers, it's time to swap out heavy corduroy and wool for lighter, breathable fabrics such as midweight cotton, linen, or nylon.

Jackets

Jackets nowadays come in endless varieties, ranging from shackets to raincoats, leather to suede, cropped styles to waterproof designs, leaving you spoiled for choice.

For those relaxed moments, the shacket reigns as the supreme layering piece. Available in various materials and thicknesses, this denim option from Kenzo catches the eye with its embroidered signature flower, adding a touch of soft charm.

A waterproof jacket will see you through April showers and any countryside adventures you'll inevitably wind up on during spring. Gorpcore has made technical clothing fashionable, so you don’t have to worry about choosing one or the other. A clean, monochrome rain jacket is an easy all-rounder.

There has been a resurgence in military styles on the runways, and we’re better off for it: just like the real thing, they are well-built for the outdoors and automatically sharpen up your look.

Footwear

It's all about penny loafers this year- from smart leather and platformed styles to casual brushed suede, they are a big hit for SS24. To be fair, have these sleek classics ever not been cool? While black is often deemed the smarter choice, feel free to opt for your preferred style.

A pair of sneakers is essential for those shopping or casual meetup kind of days. While Air Forces and basketball high-tops are crowd favourites, leather shoes can become sweaty and smelly, particularly in warmer months. Instead, consider sneakers crafted from canvas, which pair seamlessly with a relaxed, grungy aesthetic.

These items, with a big enough bag to stuff your extra layers in, should see you through to summer smooth sailing. While statement pieces are undeniably fun, don't overlook the importance of versatile basics. Quality over quantity is key.

Keep an eye out for interesting textures and fabric treatments, but don’t go overboard. After all, monochrome dressing is big this season, so if in doubt, DON’T go all out!
