You might be thinking that Spring and Summer are a long way down the road, but in the world of fashion, we’re already dreaming of warmer days.

The fashion calendar operates on its own timeline, and brands showed their collections for the coming summer back in June. While I’m sure there will be TikTok and streetwear trends popping up throughout the year, the upcoming fashion trends have already been unveiled on the runways.

Don’t be deterred from experimenting with other styles but know that these trends are going to dominate the scene. So, if you want to get a head start on your wardrobe planning for a fashion-forward spring and summer, our style guide keep you in the loop of what’s hot.

The coming season is all about sensuous fabrics and intriguing textures coalescing in familiar silhouettes. The modern romantic look represents a new dimension of masculine dressing, while soft grunge also takes centre stage as the go-to casual style.

The Modern Romantic

Newsflash! These days men are encouraged to show more expressive capacity than a rock. That’s what makes the Timothée Chalamets and Harry Styles’ of the world so swoon worthy.

The romantic look is going strong and invites men to be confident and play with their individual style. At the fashion shows, shirts were brought to life with embroidery, colour, and texture, and the standard suit became a canvas for delicate extravagance.

Designers played with draped, twisted, and knotted fabrics, and embellished with bows, flower details, and sparkly elements. Despite this decorative direction, there was a collective restraint from excess.

The trend embraces subversive energy, encouraging experimentation with unconventional tailoring, textures, and silhouettes, challenging traditional norms with a fresh and modern perspective.

Many brands brought the shock factor to suit trousers by compressing them into short shorts, and it was a major hit among show attendees—Jacob Elordi became their poster child when he rocked a pair for the Valentino show.

If you want to get your thighs out, then go for it, but if you’re just starting to dabble into more daring fashion, try a tank top or a knitted vest. Both are hit items and can be worn alone or layered.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with open weaves and interesting yarns. You could also get yourself a pearl necklace or bracelet as a timeless accessory that goes well with most outfits.

And if you ever work your way up to styling a skirt, layering one (or more than one together) over a pair of wide-leg trousers. It doesn’t necessarily end up looking ‘feminine’; in fact, styled with darker colours and a slouchier silhouette, you can exude major main character ninja energy.

Soft Grunge

Grunge hasn’t gone anywhere, nor will it anytime soon. I’m not talking about 2014 Tumblr grunge, but the androgynous, casual silhouettes that appeal to streetwear, punk fashion, and everyday wear. Why wouldn’t you like a trend that makes laid-back dressing stylish?

This season, designers paid homage to the rebellious, indie spirit of the 90s with soft takes on grunge, materialized through relaxed silhouettes and layering, adding some edge through washed denim and distressed textures.

Grunge spilled over into corporate attire with youthful updates to workwear that reflect the modern flexibility of working life. Casual, oversized blazers and matching baggy shorts were paired with reworked shirts and skinny ties for a not-so-classic take on classic suiting.

Functional Fever

The SS24 shows continued to narrate the love affair between sport and fashion at all levels, from athleisure to performance wear. Streetwear brand BAPE brought back the beloved sports jersey, while Skepta’s Mains show featured head-to-toe motorbike gear.

Designers utilized exaggerated proportions to strike a visually appealing balance between athleticism and chic. Incorporation of sporty, functional elements is key, whether you’re doing it for the fashion alone or actually have a ‘meeting at 1, marathon at 3’ kind of lifestyle.

This includes the technical outerwear craze, which keeps developing through increasingly sophisticated designs and materials. Our newfound obsession with functionality was taken to the extreme with statement pockets on jackets, trousers, and vests.

All you need is a neutral waterproof jacket that will cover you in rain or shine and you’ll be sorted on the fashion front too. If you want to inject some colour into your wardrobe, bold blue was a hit this season and aligns well with the performance aesthetic.

Extra Bits

The colour palette for the season was understated with pops of colour here and there. Monochrome dressing was reaffirmed with white-on-white, dark brown, and black-on-black ensembles.

Designers made space for surreal and abstract graphics but held back on in-your-face prints (not counting bold florals and the tropadelic trend), preferring graphic lines and lowkey, smaller scale monograms.

The real outbursts of creativity came through in hyper textures and fabric treatments, like worn-down leather, distressed denim, and bold detailing, providing tactile and visually engaging elements.

As ever, an outfit cannot be truly complete without accessories, and offerings reflected the dynamic and eclectic spirit of the season. Chunky chokers with metal spikes stood out, as well as updated penny loafers, utilitarian hardware, statement belts, crossbody bags, and tinted lenses.

The Spring/Summer 2024 fashion trends offer a playground of creativity, and there is a harmonious balance between simplicity and originality. Classic pieces are back in style but elevated with personal flair.

Whether you're drawn to the romantic allure of sensuous fabrics, the care-free energy of grunge, or practicality of performance wear, this season offers plenty of stuff to experiment with. So, when you start planning your summer rotation, get the fashion stamp of approval by incorporating some of these trends.
