Fashion Brands Are Obsessed with Making Hybrid Shoes

As shoe companies strive to one-up each other and themselves in the relentless cycle of sneaker releases, the industry often witnesses the emergence of outlandish designs. Some of these creations strike a chord with consumers, while others fall by the wayside.

The Margiela tabis became a sensation, for example, while the froggy Wellipets, although briefly spurred on by Emily Ratajkowski, quickly died out. The MSCHF big red boots took the fashion world by storm for a period, but they’re not exactly a timeless shoe.

In a similar vein, brands have been experimenting with hybrid shoes, merging different styles to create novel footwear. These hybrids are often the result of collaborations between brands from diverse backgrounds, such as sportswear and high fashion houses.

These shoes appeal to both markets and are more digestible than radically avant-garde designs because they build on familiar silhouettes. It’s a matter of finding a balance between being too strange and not standing out enough.

While not everyone's cup of tea, the more striking hybrids can generate buzz online, drawing the attention of fashion-forward individuals.

Let's delve into some recent and upcoming hybrid shoe releases of the year.

Salomon X MM6 Mules

Released on June 25, 2024, the Salomon X MM6 mules are a collaboration between Salomon and Maison Margiela. The design has been reworked into a slip-on silhouette by essentially removing the heel.

Meanwhile, all the technical features of Salomon's XT-4 sneaker remain, such as the Agile Chassis™ Skeleton, one-pull Quicklace system, carbon-like coating over the mesh uppers, and dual-density midsoles.

Available in three colour options—"Transparent Yellow and Lapis Blue," "White and Spring Bouquet," and "Black"—these mules feature the Margiela number branding with the letter '6' circled on the toe box.

So what is their purpose exactly? While they look sporty, they definitely lack some important support, so these are more of a fashion shoe. I can imagine wearing them to an office job with a casual dress code, as they are clearly more professional than Crocs but can still be easily slipped off under your desk!

New Balance 1906L Loafers

The New Balance 1906L loafers, made in collaboration with Junya Watanabe, combine the mesh and metallic silver-grey finishes usually found in sneakers with leather piping and panelling on the upper that resembles a loafer.

A chunky sole, engineered for superior shock absorption and repulsion, makes them extra comfortable. The upper features the New Balance "N" and a discreet logo on the heel.

Although these loafers generated excitement online due to their hybrid concept, their muted design, especially in the grey colourway, comes across as wearable but also unremarkable. They kind of evoke an orthopaedic vibe or even something by Geox.

Will people swap out their dad shoes for these in the long run? I have my doubts.

Puma MOSTRO

Returning this year to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Puma MOSTRO initially launched in Light Grey and Yellow, followed by "Pink Delight" and "Ignite Blue." Its success prompted the release of a black and white colourway on July 13th.

The name Mostro, derived from the Italian word for monster, reflects its Frankenstein-like design that combines elements from spiky sprinting shoes of the '60s and surfing shoes of the '80s.

AWGE x Puma Mostro 3D

Speaking of Puma Mostros, A$AP Rocky also revealed a new Puma Mostro 3D at his AWGE debut show in Paris. Amongst the footwear and accessories, this spiky, otherworldly shoe stood out as a piece for the boldest of dressers.

The shoe comes to life through its glossy red and light purple designs, as if two balls of slime had mutated into shoes. This represents Puma’s first venture into fully 3D-printed footwear and is set to launch in September.

Miu Miu x New Balance Mules

The Miu Miu x New Balance collaboration has returned with the unofficially named "Miules," a hybrid of the New Balance 530 and a mule. Offered in recognizable constructions and colourways, including distressed white leather and soft brown suede, these shoes are essentially the Miu Miu x New Balance 530 from the midfoot forward, with a slip-on sandal design at the back.

Although a release date has not been set, these hybrids are highly anticipated.

Bad Bunny x Adidas “Ballerinas”

Ballerina shoes are making a comeback, and Bad Bunny has taken note. His latest collaboration with Adidas hasn't even been announced yet, but a sneak peek from one of his date nights with Kendall Jenner has given us some insights.

The "ballerina" sneaker appears to be based on Adidas' Taekwondo model and features adjustable toggle laces. This dainty, slim-fitting shoe is elegant and eye-catching, with its allure stemming from its petite shape and indent in the soles.

While they may be challenging to style, Bad Bunny's fearless approach to fashion ensures these shoes will make a statement.

Adidas x Clot Dress Superstar

Clot has re-imagined the iconic Adidas Superstar as a dress shoe, entirely in black patent leather with a rubber shell toe and perforated brogue detailing. The Oxford-style rope laces and stitched Three Stripes branding enhance its dressed-up look, while a small heel adds a formal touch.

Although no release date has been confirmed, this stylish reinterpretation is expected to drop in autumn 2024.

From practical slip-ons to avant-garde designs, these collaborations push the boundaries of traditional footwear. Hybrid shoes continue to merge the familiar with the unexpected, and whether hit or miss, they are always entertaining.
